The Quiet Beyond

Before there is silence, there is everything.

After Rain by Shanly Simpson, shown in an interior setting.

The collection

A passage towards openness.

There are places within us that do not arrive neatly. Thought crosses memory. Instinct interrupts reason. One experience leaves its trace upon another. Lines converge, separate and return; fragments gather until what first appeared chaotic begins to reveal an order of its own.

The Quiet Beyond begins there.

Across twenty-four original works, Shanly Simpson follows an intuitive passage from density towards openness — from tangled gesture and accumulated matter to softened structures, luminous fields and the distant suggestion of horizon. The journey is not one of erasure. Nothing that came before is truly removed. It remains beneath the surface.

Chapter 01

Entanglement

“Every path begins before we know where it is leading.”

The opening works are kinetic, instinctive and densely layered. Paint behaves almost like a record of thought before thought becomes language. Lines collide, double back, escape and become trapped again. These works establish the condition from which the journey begins.

Night Tangle

White, rust, olive and near-black gestures ricochet across the surface until individual marks become part of a larger nervous system. There is urgency here, but also an unexpected coherence — the sense that beneath apparent disorder, something is already organising itself.

“Even in the tangle, a rhythm waits to be found.”

Field of Interference

The horizontal format transforms gesture into terrain. Black passages interrupt warmer traces beneath them, while delicate lines travel beyond and around the denser forms. It resembles neither landscape nor map, yet somehow carries the memory of both.

“The eye travels where no road has been laid.”

The Quiet Beyond / 03

Crossing Signals

The gestures here begin to feel communicative: one mark answering another, signals crossing before their meanings can settle. Despite its complexity, the work carries air around its movements. Entanglement is beginning to loosen.

“A conversation can begin before a word is understood.”

The Quiet Beyond / 04

The Dense Middle

One of the collection’s most uncompromising works. Line, colour and movement accumulate almost beyond resolution. The eye searches for somewhere to settle and discovers that the searching itself is part of the painting.

“Stay a little longer where the eye cannot settle.”

Buried Current

The gesture begins to sink. Black, ochre and olive appear embedded within the surface, accumulating like sediment around something still moving underneath.

“Beneath the weight of things, a pulse persists.”

Night Canopy

Against a dark field, pale trajectories hang almost weightlessly. Branches, constellations and invisible networks seem briefly possible before dissolving back into abstraction.

“Darkness holds a thousand delicate crossings.”

Chapter 02

Residue

“Eventually even movement leaves a stillness behind.”

The vocabulary begins to change. Gesture recedes beneath pigment. Marks become impressions. Surfaces are covered, disturbed and uncovered again. These paintings seem less concerned with what happened than with what remains after it has happened.

Pale Archive

Layers of stone, sage, white and muted earth create the impression of a surface repeatedly written upon and erased. With colour restrained almost to silence, texture becomes memory.

Quiet Structure

Horizontal repetitions travel through muted green and mineral white like remnants of an erased system. There is order, but no rigidity. Structure has been softened by time.

Moss Chamber

Moss, olive and mineral yellow accumulate across a dense vertical field. Its density is no longer restless like the early works. Instead it surrounds the viewer — organic, immersive and strangely sheltering.

Blue Sediment

Blue-black, mineral grey and muted metallic passages collect in repeated bands. Colour seems to have arrived slowly — deposited layer after layer by an imagined passage of time.

Dissolving City

Forms rise through silver, chalk and warm mineral pigment like architecture glimpsed through rain. Walls become atmosphere. Grids become traces. The constructed world is slowly surrendering its edges.

“A wall can lose its edges and still hold a life.”

After Rain

Blue-grey passages descend through a vertical field in which reflection, architecture and water hover at the edge of recognition. Everything appears washed, softened and newly distant.

“The familiar returns with a different light upon it.”

Fault Lines

Olive, black, cream and burnt orange divide the vertical field into structures that appear simultaneously built and weathered. Order survives, but only imperfectly.

“Through each fracture, another history comes into view.”

Chapter 03

Threshold

“Between what remains and what begins, a space opens.”

Something opens. Repeated structures appear. Geometry enters. Circles interrupt the rectangle. Gesture becomes architecture and architecture begins, almost immediately, to dissolve. These are threshold paintings — neither belonging entirely to the density behind them nor yet to the openness ahead.

Remnant I

Small, restrained and almost archaeological, this work feels like a surviving fragment. Scraped pigment, blocks of neutral colour and quiet geometry carry the memory of something larger without revealing what it might once have been.

Remnant III

The final Remnant carries the darkest structure of the three, yet paradoxically feels closest to release. Linear forms recede above a broad pale field, as though the last scaffolding of an earlier state is slowly lifting away.

“We loosen our hold, and the edges grow lighter.”

The circle changes everything. Pale green, abrasion and exposed passages transform the painted surface into something resembling an aperture: object, world, opening — or simply colour contained within a perfect boundary.

White Planet

Clouded greys and fractured whites drift through the pale circular field. After the compressed energy of the opening works, its emptiness feels almost radical. Space is no longer something between marks. Space has become the subject.

Repeated green forms gather across a pale field like a pattern remembered through weather. The image balances rhythm and erosion: structure persists, but it no longer needs to explain itself.

“Each return brings a small, almost invisible change.”

Chapter 04

Horizon

“And then, almost without noticing, we can see farther.”

There is no dramatic resolution. Instead the paintings begin to breathe. Structure recedes into distance. Pigment becomes atmosphere. The horizon does not announce itself. It simply appears.

The Clearing

A pale field opens around a low dark threshold. After so much accumulation, emptiness arrives not as absence but possibility. The painting seems to have made room for distance.

The Quiet Beyond

And finally, there is distance. The gestures that once tangled across the surface have become faint memories within light. Stillness is not where the journey began. It is what became visible when there was finally enough space to see it.

“We have come far enough to let the distance be.”
